A Day Out on The Severn Valley Railway
Kidderminster - Bridgnorth - Kidderminster
Images on this page include: Funicular Railway at Bridgnorth, High Street, Bridgnorth, Kidderminster Station, Low Town at Bridgnorth, Northgate Museum, Stoneway Steps, The Remembrance Garden, Town Hall and Market Hall.
The first time that I went to the Severn Valley Railway was in 1986, the sounds and smells instantly brought back memories of my childhood holidays (vacation) - even though that was only 20 years previous.
I did take a camera with me in 1986, but photography was still an expensive hobby, and for some, like me, didn’t have the money to take 100’s of photos, to gain experience, so for me it was aim, click, then hope that a week later when the film had been processed, you might get half a dozen acceptable prints from a 24-exposure film.
I haven’t included any of those photos that I took in 1986 because, although most of them turned out ok, I only have scans of the final prints, and those prints have faded a bit over the years, unfortunately the negatives have been lost.
In 1986, the loco sheds at Bridgnorth were open to visitors, anyone could go it and look around and talk to the volunteers that were restoring the engines and carriages, but due to Health and Safety restrictions now, this is no longer possible.
In Bridgnorth there are plenty of places to have something to eat and drink, in 1986, it was a picnic in the park for me, this time we had lunch in one of the many pubs, then later on, it was afternoon tea on the terrace at the Winding House Tea Rooms, drinking tea, and eating scones whilst watching the funicular railway in action.
All photos taken on 23rd August 2012.

Kidderminster Station - The Kidderminster end of the Severn Valley Railway.

Northgate Museum - The museum is run and managed by volunteers from the Bridgnorth and District Historical Society, which founded the museum in 1951. Amongst other items it houses maps, paintings, archaeological finds, and coins dating from the Roman occupation right through to a Royal Mint Collection of Pre-decimal Coins (minted 1970).

High Street, Bridgnorth - The Town Hall and Market Hall are in the centre of the picture.

Town Hall and Market Hall - The building was constructed in 1652 from a redundant tithe barn donated by a Lady Bertie from the town of Much Wenlock. The space underneath is still used as a market on Fridays and Saturdays.

Costa Coffee - I don't know what this building was used for, but it now houses a branch of Costa Coffee.

Stoneway Steps - A few yards from the funicular railway are the Stoneway Steps, 137 steps that lead down from Castle Terrace to Low Town. The steps have iron edges to them, this helped to keep the steps intact when used by horses to make deliveries.
