The building on the corner of New Street and Ethel Street was constructed as a Masonic Hall in 1869, the first films that were shown there were in 1896, it was later converted, and opened as a full-time cinema in 1910 with seating for 1259 people.
As a cinema it has had several names over the years, those are: Theatre de Luxe in July 1910, Regent Cinema in 1922, it was then taken over by ABC in 1929 and renamed The Forum in 1930, and in 1961 it was renamed ABC New Street.
It Closed its doors as a cinema 09th April 1983, with ‘E.T’ being the last film shown there.
The exterior of the building is Grade II Listed.
